A Professor in the Sociology Department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Barb Brents has spent more than 25 years studying politics, sex and gender, and is considered one of the world’s leading experts on sexual commerce and Nevada’s legal brothels.

Through a variety of organizations and projects, Barb Brents work towards achieving evidence-based reform to the criminal legal system and prostitution law, and is involved in promoting healthy sexuality, and in advocating for sex workers’ human rights.

Research
Barb Brents' work is at the forefront of a small, but growing, number of scholars exploring the political economy of sexuality. She applies research on sexual commerce, to understand the politics of sexuality; the intersections of culture and economics; sexual markets and consumption; and the emotional and bodily labor of selling sex.

She regularly engages in interdisciplinary projects and international networks to encourage the production and dissemination of research on sexuality, culture, and economics across the globe.
